IUI (Intrauterine Insemination)
Prepared sperm are placed directly into the uterus — a gentle first-step treatment.
Intrauterine Insemination (IUI) places specially washed and prepared sperm directly into the uterus at the time of ovulation using a thin catheter. The procedure takes a few minutes, is painless and requires no anesthesia.
It is considered a first-step treatment before IVF for young couples and mild infertility. Success is 10-20% per cycle; if there is no result after 3-4 attempts, moving on to IVF is usually recommended.
Who is it suitable for?
- Mild male factor
- Cervical (cervix-related) problems
- Unexplained infertility in young couples
- Mild endometriosis
For IUI to succeed at least one tube must be open, so the tubes are first evaluated with an HSG (hysterosalpingography) X-ray.
